Welcome to the first installment of a section of mecanto.com that you will enjoy particularly if you’re a newbie looking for Free Tips and Guides.
I’m going to show you how to do a Launch Jacking campaign today. This is my favorite Affiliate Marketing technique and it also happens to be the first technique that allowed me to feel the immense joys of success for the first time. Honestly, I can’t even put that feeling into words, just know that it was the best feeling I had all year.
If you aren’t feeling excited yet, I can guarantee that what I’m about to show you will excite you and maybe even inspire you.
I went into my first launch jacking with no expectations. After all, this was my first try. But this is what happened after the product launched:
These earnings took place between 6/13 and 6/16 only and this screenshot was taken the morning of 6/16. By the end of 6/16, my Sales count increased to 66 (from 52 shown above) and profits increased by another few hundred dollars.
I could have never predicted this in my wildest dreams, even when I was anticipating what kind of results I would get from my efforts in a best case scenario.
I had made money online before this, but not in the same manner, so you could say this event is what genuinely opened my eyes to the possibilities of a career in Internet Marketing and I realized right then and there that anyone else could do it too.
Until now, I always felt that successful Internet Marketers had something that I didn’t, but this way of thinking couldn’t be more foolish! With all due respect, some of the most successful Internet Marketers are some of the least intellectual people you will ever meet and it’s because intellect means nothing without hard work!
On 6/13, I finally lived the fantasy of logging into Hotmail to find my Inbox flooded with “You’ve Got Money” e-mails from PayPal.
This actually made me work harder than ever before because it became addicting. You see, that experience felt so great that I’ve been chasing that same feeling ever since.
A few years ago I also made a pact with myself – as someone that completely understands the struggle of coming up as an Internet Marketer – I promised myself that I would share the recipe for success with aspiring Internet Marketers once I found it myself and that is exactly what I’m doing today in writing this Launch Jacking tutorial. In addition, I send free guides, tips, and tools to all of my subscribers. If interested, look to the right sidebar or below this post and enter your e-mail. I can assure you that your information is in safe hands (and you will also get really cool free stuff).
How to create a Launch Jacking campaign
Launch Jacking is a phrase that Internet Marketers use to describe the promotion of a product that has not yet been released. The idea is that you prepare a website and/or video to review a product prior to its launch date, rank your website and videos prior to the launch date, and then you are ideally ranking for that product on the launch date.
But how can you promote something that hasn’t been released yet?
There are many perks to being an Affiliate Marketer. And one of my favorite perks is receiving review copies of products from the creator prior to its release. These review copies are distributed towards the purpose of making sure their affiliates are equipped to effectively promote the product.
For example, when I was in the midst of my Rent-A-SERP promotion, the product creator sent me the WordPress Theme and Plugin. I took advantage of this and immediately got to work on a Rent-A-SERP installation demo published to YouTube.
If you are planning a launch jack for an Internet Marketing product, there are a few resources online that will give you product launch schedules to see which products are going to be released in the coming months.
My favorite websites are:
- Muncheye.com – This is where I always go to check the product launch schedules.
- Jvzoo.com – Kind of like the Click Bank of Internet Marketing products. This is where you also request approval to promote a lot of the products.
If memory serves me well, you should be able to create a free account on each of the websites shown above and you should create an account on all of them because they will come in handy.
Choosing a product
When choosing a product, it’s important that you don’t just look at the payouts and choose based on that.
I have a rule for choosing the products I promote on this site and elsewhere:
I will only promote products that I like and appreciate as an Internet Marketer and will never promote a product that I do not like or represents an unfamiliar territory of Internet Marketing.
This rule is important to me. I like to be enthusiastic and enjoy what I write about when I’m sharing a product with my readers, and if I am disappointed by a product or don’t know enough about it, I simply can’t write about it.
Now, if you wanted to create a product review site that shows the good, the bad, and the ugly, perhaps that is your style and there is nothing wrong with it, just as long as you maintain honesty and integrity because if you don’t, sooner or later your conversion rates will take a beating once word of your poor reputation makes its way through the Internet Marketing forums.
In regards to launch dates, I personally believe there is an advantage in promoting something that is coming out in a month or later because it will allow you to rank your web properties naturally as opposed to spammy black hat link building, but as I’ve learned, many product creators unfortunately wait until the last moment to give their affiliates sufficient promo tools for the launch and because of that, my new approach to choosing which products I’m going to promote is:
Promote products in advance if possible, but apply for all products that appeal to me, wait to see if I get approved to promote them, and plan my moves based on which options are ultimately available to me.
How to promote the products
If you’re an experienced Internet Marketer that has been around the blocks and wisely created your own Subscriber List or even created your own product at one point to build a Buyer List, you are going to use your List for every single product you are promoting and there’s never an exception to that. Large Buyer Lists perform better than anything else and if you want the epitome of an “unfair advantage”, it’s a Buyer List. In every product launch I’ve been involved with, the Affiliate Leaderboards always consisted of affiliates with lists.
That said, we’re here today because our Buyer Lists do not exist just yet, but rest assured that day will come if you stick with the plan and keep going with this. Since we do not have a list to take advantage of, we’re going to create websites and videos. Notice I did not say websites or videos because you should really think in terms of doing both. Especially because it really doesn’t take much to upload a video review to YouTube; if anything, your website is going to be what takes the most time.
Creating a video review doesn’t require much explanation because it’s fairly obvious, but if you need to look at some examples, go to jvzoo.com and write down the names of some products that launched this week and then navigate to YouTube and search for those products. You will quickly see how Internet Marketers create their video reviews.
On the other hand, there are more options when it comes to creating your Launch Jacking review sites, so I’m going to spend more time on that.
Here are your options for platforms to create your review site:
- Free Blogs (WordPress.com, Blogspot, Google Sites, Medium, etc): Many Internet Marketers promote through free blog sites and in almost every launch I have noticed at least two reviews posted at free blogs ranking in the top 10, so this is a viable option. Besides saving money, the only advantage you have with using one of these platforms is Domain Authority. All of these free blog platforms have high domain authority which gives you an advantage in the SERPs.
- Register an EMD: The first time I did a Launch Jacking campaign, I chose this option and managed to rank on Page 1. You will want to register a domain name with the product name in the address followed by “review”, “bonus”, “discount”, etc. You would be creating an EMD for one of the main buyer keywords for this product.
- Branded review site: An example of a branded review site is Mecanto (this site). At first, branded review sites have the most difficulty ranking of these three options, but once they are established and rich with content, there is no better option in the long term than this. This is especially because Google currently prefers branded “authority” sites. So this really all depends on whether you can be successful in establishing your branded review site as an “authority”.
While Free Blogs have their clear advantage as I mentioned and they have proven to be successful, their platforms are too limited for my taste, so I used EMD (Exact Match Domains) before creating my Branded review site. And even today, I will use EMD to promote every now and then because at the time of writing this guide, my branded review site is relatively new and doesn’t have as much to offer as others.
But if you plan on sticking with Affiliate Marketing or Launch Jacking, I would recommend an approach in which for each product you are promoting, you will create one review on an EMD and one review on your Branded review site. This requires more work on your part, but two reviews will always give you a better chance than one, and don’t forget this will be more beneficial in the long term.
Since Google loves content, and EMD websites are always limited to one specific subject which gives them a tendency to be “light” when it comes to content, you are going to want to parse things out into 4 or 5 sections in your EMD. Instead of writing everything in your main post, create individual posts for your Bonus offers, product demo, etc. and interlink them in Silo format. If you need to know how to create a Silo structure for your website, here is a guide.
As for the content of your review, I can’t sit here and tell you what to write because each Affiliate Marketer should have their own personalized and unique approach to writing, but I will tell you something very important:
When you are writing about a product, be true to yourself. Do not adopt a writing style that is a poor representation of you because – believe me – readers are going to sniff this out in an instant and it will be a major turn-off.
The best advice I can give you is to just imagine you are describing a product to a close friend or family member the entire time and write your product review as if you were speaking with them. Of course, you will also want to assume – for this purpose – that your friend or family member is an Internet Marketer, but since you care about them as you should care about every person you are writing to, you are to explain how and why this product is or is not good for them and their chosen path in Internet Marketing.
For example, when it comes to certain products, like a Local SEO product, you will notice that I usually include a section in my review along the lines of “Is this product right for you?” For example, examine this review I’ve published. To me, this is one of the most important sections of any review because there are many different types of Internet Marketing products and we obviously do not need all of them. There will always be some amazing products that simply do not apply to what we’re doing.
How to rank your review
And here is the million dollar question, right? This is literally the question that people throw hundreds or even thousands of dollars to have answered because if we knew how to rank #1 for every single review, we would be on our way to filthy riches! But in reality, none of us on the outside can say that we know for certain what Google is doing. I’ve tried to run several analysis of my own to try and find patterns to reveal why certain sites rank ahead of others, but looking for patterns is especially ineffective on the subject of Affiliate Marketing, and even more so with Launch Jacking.
This is because the goal of an Affiliate Marketer is to rank high for a product immediately after its launch and make sure that ranking sticks for about a week. After a week, it doesn’t matter a whole heck of a lot because the vast majority of all product sales come through during that first week. That’s just the reality of Internet Marketing products and product launches.
We also know that people have stopped doing Black Hat ranking techniques as much because they will eventually get penalized, but affiliate marketers don’t care about “eventually” because once again, we are just trying to rank at or near the top for a short period of time and by the time our websites are penalized for black hat ranking methods, it doesn’t matter to us anymore.
So one of the best advantages of ranking your Affiliate Marketing properties is that you are encouraged to be aggressive.
(Side note: While aggressively ranking EMD and Free Blog properties can be effective in this case, you want to be very careful if you have a branded authority website like this one because the last thing you want is for your domain to be penalized and all of your hard work flushed down the toilet. So if you insist on using a tool like GSA to rank product reviews on your authority site, do not backlink your root index page; only your pages and posts)
Depending on how many days you have to prepare for the product launch, your options may vary.
If you have at least 3 weeks to prepare for a launch: I would recommend using a Private Blog Network (PBN) if you have one. If you do not have one, you really need to build one. Because regardless of what types of money sites you have in 2014, you are going to need a PBN to rank them. With your PBN, create blog posts with contextual links to your product review. I was able to rank my Rent-A-SERP domain on Page 1 of Google with only 4 PBN backlinks which were distributed approximately one week apart from one another. I also used Open Site Explorer to find a few social bookmarking sites and forums that my competitors were using and dropped my links there as well. The more powerful your PBN sites are, the more of an impact they will have on your money site. In general, you will want PBN sites with a Domain Authority of at least 20, but these are becoming increasingly expensive, so do some research about how to find and purchase expired domains for your PBN. Fortunately, there is a free website used to search for Expired Domains at ExpiredDomains.net.
If you have less than 3 weeks to prepare for a launch: You basically only have one option here and that’s to build as many links as you possibly can in a short amount of time. GSA Search Engine Ranker is an excellent and affordable tool that will help you accomplish this. Matthew Woodward has the best known GSA tutorial here. Keep in mind all of your competitors are going to be doing the same thing, so it’s important to keep GSA running constantly prior to the launch and try to utilize the best site list possible. Site lists are what you use to feed GSA. When you import a list of sites into GSA, it will do the rest of the work by going through the different sites and platforms to ultimately generate a link to your site as fast as possible. It does take a little while to set up a campaign at first, but after that, it is a completely hands free method to link building. You can find high quality link packages from the GSA forums, you can download links from your competitors link profiles (I recommend Majestic SEO), or you can use GSA or another software to scrape for your own links. The types of links you want to build to your review sites are definitely contextual and social backlinks, Web 2.0, Wiki links, Press Releases, and even though it’s a nofollow link, I believe linking to your review site in your YouTube videos is also beneficial, aside from the obvious benefit which is pointing viewers to your money site.
Affiliate Marketing and Launch Jacking can be a lot of work, but if you were expecting a get rich quick path to online riches, you are going to be sorely disappointed in the end. That said, the rewards from hard work in Internet Marketing and especially Affiliate Marketing are well worth it.
When it comes to these methods and techniques, the more success you have doing them, the more money you are going to make with less effort. For instance, if you build a few popular review sites and you are wise to implement a means of collecting each buyer’s e-mail address, you will be able to contact proven buyers that have purchased from you previously every single time you are promoting a new product.
So even if your review site is an utter failure once in a while, your Buyer List could be your saving grace. Trust me on that because this has happened to me a few times even though my Buyer List is very small at the time of writing this! On that note, I’ll close this out with a quick story that will hopefully inspire you:
After a successful Launch Jacking campaign on my very first attempt, I prepared another one, but this time I only had a few days to rank my blog and video and I wasn’t able to pull it off. I was even taking a loss on the $5 services from Fiverr that I had purchased! But fortunately, I had collected around 50 or 60 e-mails from all of my buyers from the first (and only) launch and managed to get 10 buyers out of that group! It shouldn’t surprise you too much though because the people I sold to were once again all buyers and most of them were people ready to do whatever it takes to find success online, and I told them about an excellent product that could be supplemented with the first product to get more out of it, so the offer itself made a lot of sense. But here I am talking about a Buyer List that is not even 1% as large as most successful Affiliate Marketers.
These are the reasons I’ve committed myself to this path and I recommend the same thing for you. Affiliate Marketing can be very rewarding and a lot of the time it leads to your own Product Launches which is even better!
